Religion Breeds Good And Bad Spirits In Adherents

January 13, 2025 by EnnisP Leave a Comment

Both your mind and your attitude must be shaped by the teachings of Jesus.

Repentance Reflects Your Mindset
Not Your Knowledge

Before we begin, a clarification.

When I mention the word spirit, I’m not talking about a personal being, like the Holy Spirit or a demonic spirit or even the human spirit. I’m talking about attitude, perspective or outlook.

In a word, mindset.

Your personal spirit is the core of your being. Your attitude reveals which way your spirit is leaning. Attitude is the barometer of how well you’re doing spiritually.

Attitude and spirit are, of course, inalterably connected but they aren’t the same. When people cheer loudly and excitedly at sporting events, they are said to have lots of spirit but that expression of spirit is different to the personal spirit from which it derives in the same way thoughts are different to the brain.

I’m focused on your attitude, not your personal spirit. [Read more…] about Religion Breeds Good And Bad Spirits In Adherents

14 Thoughts On Testing The Spirit

July 14, 2024 by EnnisP Leave a Comment

Beliefs compel us to act even when what we believe it wrong.

Insisting That Truth
Must Always Be Honored
Is Fair
Adamantly Claiming You Know All Truth
Is Not

The Bible makes a very curious statement in 1 John 4:1.

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see if they are from God.

It’s not just curious. It also sounds a bit weird.

Weirdness aside, though, we shouldn’t pass over it too quickly or casually. We’re told to do the test so we need to figure out what it means and how it’s done.

What The Test Implies

At the very least, the need for a test means we cannot walk around thinking we have everything figured out, that there’s never going to be a time when we have all the answers much less know all the questions.

Knowing Jesus gives us a great deal of confidence (and security) but it doesn’t make us all-knowing. The confidence He gives is great but daily living is still an unmapped journey. Faith is simple but should never be simple minded. We still need to pay attention.

Large ships navigate from one port to another over thousands of miles accurately because they trust their navigational instruments. But trust doesn’t mean they turn instruments on and take a coffee break till they arrive. They constantly monitor the situation 24/7, and make adjustments as needed (and they are always needed), until their destination appears on the horizon.

John is telling us to watch where we are going, to pay attention. God is leading. We are following but following requires an intentional, intelligent awareness of where we are in relation to where we’re going each and every day. [Read more…] about 14 Thoughts On Testing The Spirit

The Truth Shall Set You Free

November 17, 2017 by EnnisP 1 Comment

Unflinching bias is the worst kind of bondage.

Bias May Become
Obstinance
Before It Becomes
Repentance

John chapter 8 represents a pivotal point in the relationship between Jesus and the Pharisees. It wasn’t the last time Jesus spoke to them or responded to their questions but it does record one of the longest single conversations Jesus had with the religious leaders in Jerusalem. And it didn’t end well.

It took place about 29 AD which means Jesus was approximately two-thirds into His three-year public ministry. The Pharisees had argued and debated with Jesus for two years and even talked about killing Him.

Things were escalating. In the end of John 8, they attempted to stone Him.

Nothing New

There is very little new content in this chapter. Apart from the opening few verses (the woman caught in adultery), the issues had been mentioned before.

Overview

The Pharisees complained in chapter eight that Jesus had no evidence for what He claimed. They knew this wasn’t true. Everyone else knew this wasn’t true and Jesus did respond to their accusations but one of the most important statements He made was to those who believed. What He said has inspired and stimulated thought ever since.

You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free. (John 8:32)

But getting back to the Pharisees, just to show how misleading their claim was, following are the many times and ways Jesus was attested to. All the references are from the Gospel of John.

  • John Baptist said He was the light of every person, 1:8. This is critical because everyone recognized John Baptist as a prophet, even the Pharisees. They didn’t like him but they couldn’t deny he was a prophet.
  • John Baptist also said Jesus was at the Father’s side, 1:18.
  • Jesus did many miracles in Jerusalem, 2:23. These miracles happened following the cleansing of the Temple and in response to the Pharisees request for a sign of His authority to clean the temple (v. 18). It was these miracles that prompted Nicodemus to confess, “We know you are a teacher come from God.” (3:2)
  • John Baptist also said God has placed all power in the hands of Jesus, 3:35.
  • Jesus referred to John Baptist as a witness to Him, 5:31-35.
  • He reminds the Pharisees that His miracles are a witness, 5:36.
  • Scriptures are a witness to Jesus, 5:39.
  • Moses was a witness, 5:45-46.
  • Crowds were a witness (they wanted to make Him King), 6:14-15.
  • His ability to teach was a witness, 7:15, 46.
  • Logical arguments were a witness, 7:21-24. Jesus compared His healing of a man on the Sabbath to the Pharisees custom of circumcising on the Sabbath.

In spite of so much evidence, the Pharisees still insisted there was nothing to back up the testimony of Jesus.

How The Pharisees Responded

In spite of the evidence, the Pharisees’ responses are dismissive, defensive and sarcastic.

  • They accuse Jesus of self-promotion.
  • They asked where Jesus’ father was, even though they knew that no one had seen God.
  • They asked if He was planning to commit suicide.
  • They asked Him who He was, a question that had been asked and answered many times.
  • They assumed they weren’t in bondage.
  • They claimed Abraham as their father, as if that made them privileged.
  • Then they claimed God as their father.
  • They call Jesus a demon-possessed Samaritan.
  • They deny eternal life.
  • They claimed Abraham could never have known of Jesus since he was long dead before Jesus came.
  • They attemtp to stone Jesus.

The Pharisees were clearly being obstinant. There was no open discussion or respectful debate. They weren’t asking questions or sincerely seeking answers. They were not offering rational arguments. Their intent was to cause trouble. Every effort to discredit Jesus had failed and the frustration bled through.

Tim Pepper Music – Soulful Tuesday – Darker Side

Darker Side

Long before Star Wars popularized the concept, rock stars were making The Dark Side fashionable. Jim Morrison comes to mind. Others followed suit.

Morrison, of course, was a great, or at least interesting poet to many and an anathema to some. It was his fascination with the dark side that made people flinch.

Tim Pepper’s song focused on the dark side too, but it came from a different angle. It made me think the reality is bigger but maybe less threatening than we imagine. The lyrics have an entertaining rhythm and a playful sound but from the title to the last chorus it’s thought provoking.

The Darker Side is not a place we hold dear. We avoid it or think we do. The effort we make to not talk about it is obvious. But it’s there. It’s not so far away. It’s closer than we think and brushes with it are inevitable. [Read more…] about Tim Pepper Music – Soulful Tuesday – Darker Side

10 Real Truths About Personal Choice

November 26, 2014 by EnnisP Leave a Comment

Making one choice is the same as eliminating others.

No Situation Is Void
Of Choice

Freedom is a hot button issue. History would be a very boring, and a short topic if it weren’t for all the skirmishes over personal freedom.

It’s universal. We all want freedom. When we have it we feel independent, unencumbered and unobstructed.

But is that really true?

Closely related to Freedom is Choice. If a person is free, the assumption is they make their own choices.

And that makes sense. Is a person really free if they don’t have choice and isn’t choice one evidence of freedom?

Freedom is the issue but choice is the mechanism.

Neither of these ideas comes without restrictions, though. Rules, conditions and limitations apply. [Read more…] about 10 Real Truths About Personal Choice
